We combine high tech with user-friendly product design to create innovative product designs to empower people with disabilities, whether that's an everyday product like a keyboard, or or an educational product like a geometry set.
Braille Keyboards
The present invention pertains to an innovative braille keyboard designed to address the needs of visually impaired individuals. It integrates 3D-printed custom braille keys with repurposed standard keyboards, achieving a production cost of $10 or less per unit. The device is offered in both pre-assembled and modular configurations, featuring tactile feedback for enhanced key recognition and braille learning. Constructed with lightweight yet durable materials, the keyboard is optimized for long-term use. Its scalable design combines low-cost 3D printing with donated components, enabling mass production and global distribution. Workshops validate its efficacy in improving typing speed and learning outcomes, presenting a transformative solution for accessible education and employment opportunities.

This initiative advances learning for the visually impaired by creating geometric shapes (2D and 3D) which will feature distinct textures for tactile identification as well as Braille labels.
Just like the maps & globes, these shapes will be printed with high-resolution settings for optimal tactile feedback.

This initiative aims to create a tactile, Braille-labeled map and globe for visually impaired users. The maps will use raised borders and textures to represent geographical features.
The globe will highlight continents and major landmarks with Braille labels. All models will be 3D printed with high-resolution settings for optimal tactile feedback, ensuring ease of exploration and navigation.

The smart cane is a smart mobility device designed for visually impaired users, integrating sensors, GPS, and Bluetooth technology to enhance navigation. It provides real-time obstacle detection, route guidance, and location tracking through a mobile app, offering both auditory and haptic feedback.
The cane's connected features help users navigate unfamiliar environments safely, while the app allows for personalized settings and emergency alerts, promoting greater independence.

AEOP grant winner building braille learning systems to teach braille at a fraction of the cost and complexity of other systems.
Artemis develops the Artemis Glasses, a lightweight wearable device that uses computer vision and deep learning to recognize physical Braille and translate it into audio. Using this, the system guides users through the Braille learning process.
With limited Braille teachers and expensive existing solutions, Artemis offers a scalable and cost-effective way, doing more and better for less.
Student Mobility Initiative
Student Mobility Initiative develops an intelligent, self-navigating wheelchair designed for large indoor environments such as airports, hospitals, and campuses.
Users can select a destination, such as a gate or room, and the wheelchair uses LiDAR, depth cameras, and other sensors to plot a route and continuously adjust it as the wheelchair travels. A touchscreen interface allows users to choose where to go.
For persons requiring a wheelchair, navigating large environments can be stressful and time-consuming, for both the person and caregivers. We use affordable hardware and intelligent navigation to make mobility easier, safer and more autonomous.
